Poster by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), representing the dancer Jane Avril (one of the most famous dancers at the Moulin-Rouge) and the well-known musical and literary critic of the time Édouard Dujardin. It was the director of the “Divan Japonese”, a fashionable café-concert & night club, who placed the order with him. This poster is one of his most brilliant creations, emblematic of his lithographic art.
Toulouse-Lautrec is a French painter, designer, poster designer and illustrator , born into one of the oldest noble families in France. He sketched the way of life of Parisian Bohemia at the end of the 19th century. He is considered "the soul of Montmartre", the Parisian district where he has lived since his installation in 1884, his paintings describe life at the Moulin-Rouge, and in other Parisian cabarets and theaters, but also prostitution through brothels.
